Julie Gayle Balliu is a British artist working primarily in watercolour, pen and ink.

Having lived in different places across the UK and Europe, her experiences of place and movement continue to inform her interest in memory, belonging and the traces people leave behind.

​

Her work explores houses, buildings and everyday environments that carry traces of the people who have lived, worked or passed through them. Rather than architecture for architecture's sake, she is interested in the human stories held within places and the way those stories can survive as buildings, communities and uses change.

​

Research is increasingly central to her practice. A building, object or fragment of signage can become a starting point for exploring its history, inhabitants and wider community, with the resulting artwork developing as an artistic response to what she discovers.

​

Julie began her Fine Art degree in 2019, returning to art when her youngest son started school. What began as a personal return to making developed into a complete re-engagement with her identity as an artist and a growing professional practice.

​

Her recent practice includes commissions, independent projects and collaborations with organisations in the UK and internationally, including a current twelve-work collaboration with the Heidelberg Project in Detroit.

Julie currently lives and works on the Isle of Wight, UK.
