'Out Of Order'installation, Lind Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight... 27th July - 7th September 2026

These two panels explore contrasting experiences of restriction and openness through the language of signs, movement and public space. One panel reflects interruption, congestion and frustration, inspired by roadworks, diversions and the realities of island travel. The other celebrates freedom and possibility through tourist stickers, destinations and memories of journeys.

Installed within a restored K6 telephone box - Britain's iconic red kiosk, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 - the work takes its title from a familiar phrase often seen on public objects. Here, Out of Order refers not only to the changing role of the telephone box itself, but also to the diversions, interruptions and unexpected shifts that shape everyday life. Through colour, layering and fragments of text, the work reflects the ways we negotiate both obstacles and opportunities, finding new routes and different directions along the way.

The installation is presented as part of Re:Box, the Isle of Wight's smallest art gallery. Housed within a restored K6 telephone kiosk in Ryde, the volunteer-led project has transformed a redundant piece of British street furniture into a unique exhibition space for Island artists and community groups.
