I'm delighted to be preparing a new site-specific installation for Re:Box Telephone Gallery in Ryde this summer.
Housed within a decommissioned K6 telephone box on Lind Street, Re:Box is probably the Isle of Wight's smallest gallery. Created by writer Anmarie Bowler and photographer Zoe Barker, the project has given a new lease of life to this familiar piece of street furniture, transforming it into a changing exhibition space and, after dark, a glowing lightbox at the heart of the town.
Entitled 'Out of Order', my installation explores contrasting experiences of restriction and openness through signs, movement and everyday public space. Inspired by roadworks, diversions, island travel and memories of journeys, two large-scale panels transform the familiar red telephone box into a space for reflection.
The title refers not only to the changing role of the telephone box itself, but also to the interruptions and unexpected shifts that shape everyday life. Through colour, layering and fragments of text, the work reflects the ways we navigate everyday life - sometimes diverted, sometimes delayed, and sometimes discovering unexpected possibilities.
For now, these black and white glimpses offer a small preview of the project. The full colour reveal will follow once 'Out of Order' takes its place inside Re:Box later this summer from 27th July to 7th September 2026.
